Glossary and abbreviations


BDA = British Dietetic Association (the professional body and trade union for Dietitians)

BMR = Basal Metabolic Rate

CAE = Clinical Adverse Event

CGM = Continuous Glucose Monitoring, via subcutaneous sampling of interstitial fluid

CPD = Continuous Professional Development

DKA = Diabetic Ketoacidosis

DNA = Did Not Attend (or, rarely in this blog, deoxyribonucleic acid)

DSN = Diabetes Specialist Nurse

FODMAPs = Fermentable Oligo-, Di-, Mono-saccharides and Polyols

GI = Glycaemic Index: a comparative measure of how much a portion of carbohydrate will raise the blood sugar compared with the same portion of pure glucose.

HCPC = Health and Care Professions Council (the regulatory body for Dietitians and other healthcare professions) [formerly HPC = Health Professions Council]

IBS = Irritable Bowel Syndrome

LTRP = Lola Towers Renovation Project

MDI = Multiple Daily Injections (of insulin)

MDT = Multi-Disciplinary Team

NHS = National Health Service

NICE = National Institute for Health and Care Excellence [formerly National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, even more formerly National Institute for Clinical Excellence]

ONS = Oral Nutrition Support ('sip feeds', nutritional supplement drinks, soups and desserts)

PFI = Private Finance Initiative (or as Hugh put it, "The P stands for Poor, and the I for Investment. Please don't point out that I'm wrong - but the F definitely stands for Finance")

PN = Parenteral Nutrition (intravenous feeding)

RSB = Room-Share Buddy, or Really Supportive Bloke

SLT (or SALT) = Speech and Language Therapist
